At the heart of the crisis is the failure of the existing medical system to prevent the majority of diseases, the continuously escalating costs of modern medicine, and the hazardous side-effects of modern drugs and medical procedures. These hazards have been documented by thousands of reports in scientific journals (see Hazards of modern medicine).

To resolve this crisis, the Natural Law Party government will introduce an effective programme of preventive medicine based on the complete knowledge of Natural Law available in Maharishi's Vedic Approach to Health - Maharishi Ayur-Veda - the comprehensive scientific system of natural health care.

Maharishi's Vedic Approach to Health is prevention-oriented, highly cost-effective, and free from harmful side-effects.

The Natural Law Party's proposed solution to the health care crisis upholds the same principle of preventing sickness and promoting health that was the inspiration for the founding of the NHS over 50 years ago. In the words of one of the founders, William Beveridge: "Can we create a situation in which the medical, nursing, and social work professionals will be engaged mainly in promoting positive health, rather than, as at present, being strained to deal with a demand for services over which they appear to have no control and can only contain by some arbitrary method of rationing?" (Government White Paper, 1942).

The Natural Law Party's focus on prevention will allow more prompt and efficient attention to the sick, since effective prevention is the best way to relieve pressure on medical services.

This will also enable people with less serious disorders to receive medical attention at an earlier stage, when their condition can be more easily treated and thereby prevented from progressing to a more serious condition.

In addition to focusing on prevention, the Natural Law Party will also promote natural approaches to treatment of disease which are free from harmful side-effects and effective (please see section 10). These treatments will be available under the National Health Service alongside all that is useful and non-detrimental from modern medicine. Patients will have freedom to choose the system of treatment they prefer.
