The United Kingdom has one of the highest levels of vehicle smoke and soot emissions in the European Union. Air pollution hospitalises 20,000 people a year in Britain, the primary pollutants being "particulates" emitted by road vehicles.

By promoting appropriate research the Natural Law Party will vigorously explore suitable pollution-free means of generating power for transport, such as solar power and energy from vegetable oils, in order to reduce and eventually eliminate the dangers to human health and the environment caused by the use of fossil fuels and nuclear based energy.

As well as air pollution, attention will also be given to reducing noise generated by road traffic, particularly heavy goods vehicles. The Natural Law Party will promote not only the use of energy sources for transport that are pollution-free, but also the development of advanced transport technologies (such as the use of energy-storing high-speed flywheels) that are more durable and environmentally friendly.

Where environmentally and economically acceptable, schemes to reduce the amount of through traffic in our towns, cities and villages will be promoted.

Development and construction strategies will also be promoted which seek to minimise pollution, and which create a balanced and harmonious natural environment for living and working. These strategies will include the increased promotion of alternatives to car based transport within urban areas, such as "park and ride" schemes.
