EUROPEAN MANIFESTO
1999
NATURAL AGRICULTURE Making agriculture natural, healthy and in favour of the farmer, the consumer and the environment
The hazards associated with the transformation from traditional farming to industrialised, agrochemical-dependent farming have clearly been exacerbated by the economic framework set by EU Agricultural Policy. The artificial constraints set by EU Agricultural Policy have often resulted in even higher usage of chemicals, as well as over-production and waste, and a loss of the traditional diversity of crop production. The Natural Law Party will implement an urgent and complete reform of EU Agricultural Policy to rectify these imbalances reforms that will be far more substantial and address the problems on a much deeper level than anything being undertaken in the EU at the moment. The aim will be to encourage sustainable systems of farming, minimise bureaucratic intervention to farmers and promote organic agriculture, fully in alliance with Natural Law, while restoring the responsibility, self-sufficiency, and prestige of farmers. To achieve these objectives the Natural Law Party's policy will be to phase out EU agricultural subsidies over a period of seven years, at the same time as implementing a new approach that promotes a transformation of agriculture in Europe to natural, sustainable systems of agriculture, particularly organic systems. To facilitate this, agriculture subsidies will be phased out first for conventional agriculture and some of the funds transferred to research projects to develop natural sustainable systems of agriculture and to make them more productive. There will be regular reviews of the success of this important transformation of European agriculture in the direction of creating natural, healthy food for everyone. While the goal is to phase out subsidies, attention will be given to areas in special need in order to ensure that they still receive essential support either on a European or national level. An important aspect of the transformation will be to use a part of the savings for special education and training for farmers and the general public. Farmers will be introduced gradually to the importance of Vedic farming Natural Law-based farming and to programmes that will bring the consciousness of the farmer in accord with the nourishing power of Natural Law. The Natural Law Party's educational programmes will restore the dignity of farmers in the eyes of the public and raise the awareness of everyone to the importance of natural food for every aspect of health and the environment. This will include alerting everyone to the fact that fresh and locally grown food (not transported over long distances) has profound health benefits for the consumer and is an important way to protect the environment. The high standard and quality of such future agricultural production in Europe must necessarily be protected against imports of products of inferior quality from outside Europe. As agricultural subsides are reduced some of the funds will also be transferred to integrated rural development programmes that will strengthen the economic and social vitality of the EUs rural areas while restoring and protecting the natural environment. A complete ban on genetically modified foods
The Natural Law Party will place an immediate and total EU-wide ban on all genetically modified agricultural products, including field trials, commercial production, and imports The party believes that there is no alternative to a ban because of the serious, scientifically established hazards of GMOS for human health, biodiversity and the environment. The emphasis for progress in agriculture should instead be on the readily available natural alternatives to provide healthy food for the whole population. Public debate about genetically modified (GM) food has taken centre stage in many European countries this year, including Britain. With continuing extensive media coverage of the issues surrounding gm foods, people are better informed about the risks of gm foods, and opinion polls show clearly that the great majority do not want them. The Natural Law Party can take much credit for this situation since it was the first political party to take up this issue and has been actively campaigning world-wide for a ban on GM foods for several years.
