The Natural Law Party believes that the principle of subsidiarity in the EU should be replaced by the principle of putting first the sovereignty, independence and self-sufficiency of every member state. If the collective consciousness of Europe is integrated, and the national consciousness of each nation is strong and self-sufficient, then new policies will naturally be in favour of all nations and the Union as a whole.

A harmonious and well-functioning European Union will only become a living reality if none of its sovereign member states are forced to accept a treaty or directive from the Union at any time, and if every decision that can be taken at the national level is taken at the national level.

For any European treaty each country should have the freedom not to participate, or to do so at a later date (as, for example, has already happened with Economic and Monetary Union or the Schengen Treaty). No country should be forced by the European Union to adopt a policy that it does not like. It will also be necessary to develop a satisfactory mechanism for member states to modify their participation in a treaty they have already joined, in case the conditions of the treaty are no longer acceptable to the nation.
