On 12 May 1999, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi addressed a series of press conferences in the capital cities of the European Union. These events were called to launch the Natural Law Party’s campaign for the European Parliamentary elections in June. The Natural Law Party has a full slate of 85 candidates in the UK and about 500 candidates in other EU countries. It is the first political party in Europe to have a common manifesto in all EU countries. The manifesto, which was launched on the same day, tackles all the major issues confronting the European Union, including peace in the Balkans, monetary union, and agriculture policy; it offers practical solutions validated by scientific research.

The policies of the Natural Law Party, which bring all aspects of life in accord with Natural Law to create an ideal problem-free society, have been inspired by the holistic knowledge of Natural Law available today through Maharishi’s Vedic Science and Technology of Consciousness. Over the past 40 years, this knowledge has been applied in education, health, business and all areas of society with great benefit. As a result, Maharishi has been widely recognised for his immense contribution to life and progress throughout the world.

The following is a transcript of Maharishi’s address to the European media. Maharishi makes a very strong appeal to the people of Europe to leave behind the barbaric history of the continent and to vote for the Natural Law Party for a secure peaceful future of unity and happiness. Maharishi spoke via conference telephone from his headquarters at Maharishi Vedic University in Vlodrop, Holland.

Maharishi’s address:

"It is a joy for me to address the assemblies of united Europe. Unity is the nature of knowledge. Any knowledge is based on the unified state of the knower, process of knowing, and the known. This feature of knower, knowing and known taken together is Veda and Vedic Science and Vedic Technology. Having a complete grip on the Veda and Vedic knowledge, it is completely possible for us to really create a model of a unified world.

Today we are gathered in this assembly to discuss the practicality and definiteness of forming a united Europe. A united Europe means a unified world, because all of these European countries, with all their different cultures, different languages, different basis of their religions – all the differences that can be in the world – they are all present on both levels, knowledge and action, in the united Europe.

The challenge of this election

This European Union election is the election that presents a challenge: Whether Europe remains a barbarian continent, or whether it steps on to a more civilised level of harmony, love, unity, happiness.

This is the challenge of today when one country, two countries, ten countries together, invade others. Throughout the ages, throughout time, throughout centuries, countries have been destroying other countries. It is a bloody history of the world. Europe, as a combination of so many cultures, is no exception to it.

Europe has known wars, it has known Hitlers. Now Europe is faced with another Hitler – the American Government. It is very wise for the people of Europe to be awake to their responsibility for the existence of their own individual countries, and join together so that no country pounces on another country and destroys it.

The purpose of the European Union is a very divine purpose, a very pious purpose, a very religious purpose. Even though it is a political purpose, the unity of all different political systems is a very pious purpose. I emphasise that only the Natural Law Party's administration can be evolutionary for all, because it is only Natural Law that administers the infinite diversity of the universe with perfect order. So, the Natural Law Party – the people of all the countries in Europe shaking hands in the name of unity of all the laws of nature, which is unity of all the different cultures of Europe – only this political party, the Natural Law Party, can ensure safety, security, peace and happiness of all the European countries. And a strong, unified Europe can lead all the diversified countries of the world to be a model of a unified universe.

It is very necessary for the people of Europe in 1999, for the individuals of this year, to wake up to the knowledge of Natural Law, to wake up to the administrative skill of Natural Law which administers the universe – a unified diversified creation – in a unified state.

No other party – let me repeat it to the press, to the people of Europe – no other party is as generous, as competent and as ideal to keep all differences on a unified level.

People from France, Germany and all these different countries, they are so opposed to each other that if left to themselves they would simply destroy each other. I don't want to be negative, but if the Germans, French, Italians and others were left to themselves, they could be the destroyers of each other. It is basically because of this fear that the unification of the European countries was invented by some wise man, for the love of life.

Peace will never be stable while it is based on money

Today, all of the national parties are based on money: Swiss francs, French francs, dollars, whatever currency. Administration is controlled by economy; and if administration is controlled by economy, and each country has its own economy, the currency of each country challenges each other country, and there will never be stable peace. The purpose of European Union administration is to create peace. But peace will never be real as long as it is based on money. Anything based on money is based on greediness – how much I can take from this or from that.

On one level it could be argued that this spirit of competition between different countries promotes progress, but in reality it divides. On the basis of economy, unity can never be stable. It can only be stable on that one element of Natural Law, because Natural Law is equally evolutionary for everyone and everything, for every nation and every individual.

Life is governed by Natural Law. Unity can never be established by any principle other than Natural Law which is always unifying the diversity of the universe. From the level of Vedic knowledge, total Natural Law can be applied to the practicalities of every nation and the practicalities of every individual. Therefore, the only thing that will establish unified human society, unity of different nations, the only thing that can secure unity is Natural Law Party on earth.

Therefore, I would congratulate the administrators of the Natural Law Party who are organising this election campaign. I thank them for giving me the opportunity to address you all, to say that Natural Law is the only element which unifies the infinite diversity of the universe, and therefore the principles of Natural Law Party are the only principles in our world that can establish a lasting peace in any single individual nation, in the groups of nations, and in the world as a whole.

It is very fortunate that we have this Global Administration through Natural Law [Maharishi’s global organisation]. In all these 50 years of my world-wide activities of teaching Transcendental Meditation and Vedic Science through universities and colleges throughout the world, I am very proud of the present time which is going to lay out the basis of a civilised world.

Global significance of Natural Law Party for a civilised world

In the world in which we are living, all that is going on in the context of different conflicts is barbarianism – anyone who has weapons would like to kill, kill. We want to create a situation, on the principle of Natural Law, for total Natural Law to be lived by everyone. With this a very natural state of unity will be established on a permanent basis.

So, the Natural Law Party is a party in every country today, but it is going to be of global significance for a civilised world. In this world, this bloody world, whosoever has weapons uses them. It is very shameful for our time. We are living in this time, but we are living shamefully, since life is massacred and bombs are a pride for some country. In all these countries, individuals are ashamed. Germans are ashamed today to belong to Germany, and many, many French people are ashamed to belong to France, because all these countries have joined together to destroy life in Europe.

Those who are destructive don't mind what they are called today, but all these NATO countries are referred to as destroyers of the world. All these countries that are administering Europe in the name of a unified Europe have joined hands to be united in destroying parts of Europe. And anything that is happening to the countries being destroyed can happen to every country. No country is an exception to this. Therefore, many NATO members are themselves feeling defeated, are feeling hesitant to destroy the nation. But unity of these countries is being used to destroy the world. It is very shameful. It is inhuman. It is a sin to do it.

Therefore, I am making a very strong appeal to every individual in Europe – the citizens of every nation in Europe – to come together, vote for the Natural Law Party in Europe and create a united Europe for all time. Otherwise, the days of Hitler, the days of those wars and of being destroyed, are not very far.

Unified administration through Natural Law is the only way to continue to exist

The press should take note of this and alert the people to the fact that establishing a unified administration in Europe through the Natural Law Party is the only way to continue to exist on earth. Any day the flames of Yugoslavia could be found everywhere.

In all these countries the Natural Law Party has developed principles based on the Vedic knowledge, which is the knowledge of total Natural Law and specific Natural Law – different laws of nature, and their union, the unified state of total Natural Law. It is something that is the birthright of everyone, within the body of everyone, the mind of everyone, the intellect of everyone, the Self of everyone. The consciousness of everyone is the same in all. When one kills another man, one is killing oneself. All the administering intelligence that any man has, everyone has. When his brain physiology functions completely, then he functions in a harmonious manner, he functions in an evolutionary manner.

So, training and education has to include holistic knowledge of Natural Law. Physics, chemistry, and other modern scientific disciplines teach a very segregated field of knowledge. It is a wrong thing. The present youth does not receive training in using his total creative potential.

My only advice is for everyone to understand the principles of the Natural Law Party, put them into practice, vote for the Natural Law Party, and create a permanently unified Europe.

Every country invited to be a country of world peace

We are all sitting in the same world, and today we are ashamed of our world, seeing the flames and bombs falling here and there, bringing destruction. Now, we have the total knowledge of Natural Law and we can create perpetual world peace. I would ask every country to declare itself to be a country of world peace. Every country should establish peace and harmony on the collective level of the national consciousness of all countries by setting up groups of Yogic Flyers. Yogic Flying is no longer a new phenomenon; it has been there for the last 15 years. Therefore, if this generation of today wants to be a generation of tomorrow, it is time for the people to create Yogic Flyers in every country, and establish the rule of Natural Law in all the countries. There will be administration as efficient as the administration of the universe, where the sun, moon, galaxies, and so on, all function differently but all function together. This kind of unity can be created by the people in this coming election of European nations.

I wish that Europe exists tomorrow. I wish that Europe exists as Europe, next day and next day, and next year and next decade and next century. It is in the hands of the people, single individuals, Europeans today, whether they want the continent to be inhabited by human beings. If so, create the administration through Natural Law. In that way Europe can continue, otherwise it is collapsing."

QUESTIONS FROM THE PRESS

Question from London:
The BBC asks why in Maharishi’s view Europe, rather than NATO and the whole world, has such a key role with reference to the conflict in Yugoslavia.

Maharishi:
The geography answers this. Yugoslavia is close to Europe. That is why the European Union can solve the problems of neighbouring nations through Natural Law, and solve the problems of the whole world.

Question from Dublin:
How long do you think it will take before there is a change in the political culture of Europe according to the ideals of the Natural Law Party?

Maharishi:
It will depend upon the people of each country of Europe – how long you want to live in fear or how soon you want to create peace. It can be a matter of a few days. It all depends upon the individual, how he votes in this election campaign of the European Union. Whatever the people of Europe would like to have, they will have it. If they want to have a future for Europe, their vote for the Natural Law Party will give it to them.

Question from Belfast:
Will this approach finally solve the problems here in Northern Ireland?

Maharishi:
Unity will solve all problems of diversity. It is not only Northern Ireland, it is the whole world now that is bringing shame to Britishers and Americans and the whole NATO. It is not a matter of a little part of your country there.

Question from London:
How quickly would we see the effect of the group of Yogic Flyers? For example, if in Britain 1,000 Yogic Flyers were set up straight away, how quickly would the effect be evident in the country, and what sort of effect would that be?

Maharishi:
The effect will be to change the policy of the British Government. And how soon will it be? As soon as you press the switch, the light is there. Any day, any night, any moment you create the required number of Yogic Flyers in the country, that will change the policy of the government which is now to destroy life and the world. It will change into support of nature. Instantly it will happen. Just as you put on the light and the darkness is gone. Our policy is to put on the light and let darkness disappear on its own. You don't fight the dark. You bring the light and it will be instantly done.

Question from Rome
What can we do to get more success in our campaign?

Maharishi:
Tell the people the English phrase: tomorrow never comes. If Italy wants to be Italy tomorrow, then it is today that they should establish the groups of Yogic Flyers – as large a group as possible. Tomorrow never comes. And this is not only for Italy, it is for Britain. Britain today can destroy the world. But remember, it is a scientific law that reaction is equal to action. The destroyer will be destroyed. Tell this openly to the British press, and to the government of Britain, in relation to the promotion of destruction that Britain is bringing in the world. This is what you wanted to hear from me and I am telling you what you wanted to hear.

Question from London:
Maharishi was speaking about the dangers of an economy that is based on greed. How does Maharishi see our Western capitalist system changing with the influence of Natural Law?

Maharishi:
To be naturally supportive and evolutionary to everyone. Ever since economy has taken over politics, politics has lost its breath, its balanced nature. The economy that Natural Law Party will promote in every country and in a united Europe will be of a unifying nature. It will unify the diversity of life. It will unify the diversity of different cultures, different markets, different states and so on. It will be unifying. That is why we want the administration through Natural Law and to discontinue the existing administration created by national law. Human creation of law is always prone to instability. Everyone has his own axe to grind. This kind of unstable economy will never create a united Europe or a united world. But the intelligence of the world today surpasses these abilities which are there to destroy unity.

Question from London:
Maharishi compared the American government to Hitler. But in the media it is President Milosevic who is being compared with Hitler because of his policy of ethnic cleansing. Could Maharishi please comment on that?

Maharishi:
What I have already said is my commentary. No one on earth can justify destruction. Now today, we have this unified destruction created by Britishers and Americans – you want me to say that and I am telling you what you want to hear from me – Britishers and Americans are responsible for NATO, they are responsible for their action today, and that is why I tell you what the world thinks of them today. They are being hated by people. Britain and America are hated by the people. Listen to me, if you want to. Listen to me. The press of Britain or America will not be able to wash off this dirtiness of British policy. No one will be able to wash it off. The countrymen have to bear the consequences.

Question from a Yugoslav lady now living in the Ukraine:
Should the members of a Yogic Flying group be of one nation, preferably a nation in favour of Yugoslavia? Or should it be an international group?

Maharishi:
It does not matter. The sun brings the light to all the nations. It doesn't matter whether the group of 7,000 Yogic Flyers is in one country or another country. It is the whole world that is lighted by one sun. There is a huge amount of scientific research. One country: one group of 7,000. And we are going to create lots of countries like this. For the last so many years I have been giving a call to all the people to create Yogic Flyers for the country, a Group for a Government. Let me not say much, I have said enough."
