Press invitation to launch of:Campaign to ban Genetically Modified FoodMonday, 3 June 1996, 2 - 3 pm at the Institute of Directors, 116 Pall Mall, London SW1Chairman: Geoffrey Clements, D Phil, Leader of the Natural Law Party SPEAKERS: In the past few years the transnational biotechnology industry has genetically modified almost every plant and animal species from which we derive our food. They are now moving quickly to introduce these new products into the mainstream of our food supply. Regulatory agencies in Britain and elsewhere are allowing this to happen without adequate testing and without proper labelling, thus creating unprecedented risks for the health and safety of the whole population. Already, there are numerous instances of death and disease caused by genetically modified foods, as well as extensive disruption to the living environment and the entire ecosystem. The Natural Law Party is launching this campaign to invite all lovers of life to join with them in working for a ban on genetically modified foods, and to achieve at least the mandatory labelling of these foods so that the public can choose what they want to eat. The facts about the dangers of genetically modified foods, the lack of adequate government regulations, and the alarming extent of their introduction, will be discussed at the launch. All the evidence shows that these foods are not needed to fulfil the nutritional needs of humanity, and their development is motivated primarily by commercial and political interests. Dr John Fagan, who will speak at the conference, is one of the leading campaigners in the world on this issue. He became famous when he took an ethical stand against genetic engineering and returned substantial US government research grants. Dr Fagan’s book, Genetic Engineering – The Hazards. Vedic Engineering – The Solutions, reveals how genetic engineering offers only short-term partial fixes with damaging side-effects, while Maharishi’s Vedic Engineering offers comprehensive, life-supporting solutions in the areas of health, agriculture and the environment. |
