Natural Law Party congratulates government for ban on landminesMentmore, 22 May 1997 The Natural Law Party today congratulated the new Labour government for banning the import, export and manufacture of landmines. "We hope that this decision will inspire other governments to do the same," said the Party's leader Dr Geoffrey Clements, "and that a comprehensive international treaty banning landmines will soon follow. It is a principle of Natural Law that life should never be sacrificed for economic gain, and we are proud of the British government for upholding this principle." The party's defence spokesman Nigel Kahn added: "The Natural Law Party will continue to campaign for a ban on all British arms exports. For many years, Britain has been contributing to conflicts overseas by promoting such exports. The result of living off arms exports, according to the universal principle 'As you sow, so shall you reap', is an increase of crime, violence and terrorism here at home. Britain should be satisfied with supplying its own defence needs, and should not seek to make its living by exporting arms to other countries." |
