Congratulations to William Hague

Statement from Dr Geoffrey Clements, leader of the Natural Law Party of the United Kingdom

"We extend our congratulations to William Hague, the new leader of the Conservative Party. Mr Hague is a bright new leader, and we have great confidence that his wisdom and abilities will contribute towards a bright new future for British politics and for life in Britain.

"His election by the Members of Parliament of the Conservative Party provides the nation with a good choice of leader. We would have liked him to be Prime Minister, although he is now Leader of the Opposition.

Conflict-free politics

"The policy of the Natural Law Party is to function without opposition, and to create conflict-free politics. Mr Hague is renowned as a balanced politician, and many observers have commented on his capacity to harmonise Opposing opinions. We hope that his wisdom will create a problem- and conflict-free British parliament, that can serve as an example for all nations.

"We are impressed by the maturity and confidence that William Hague is already bringing to his new position as Conservative leader. Newspaper articles in the days leading up to his decisive victory noted that 'William Hague does not have that look of bemused exhaustion that marks all the other challengers... Only Mr Hague looks like the future' (Daily Telegraph, 16 June 1997). Other articles have noticed his energy: 'He rises at 5:00am each day, making use of his rare ability to survive on just a few hours sleep (one of the benefits of Transcendental Meditation)' (Sunday Times, 15 June 1997). The same article quoted a business associate, who commented on 'Hague's unusual ability to get up in front of large groups of people and make intelligent speeches'. A senior civil servant said of him in his first ministerial role: 'one of the most impressive ministers I have ever had'.

Bringing the support of Natural Law into politics and government

Election of William Hague offers a bright new future for British politics

'The Natural Law Party feels great confidence in the future of British politics with the election of William Hague as the new Conservative leader. From the age of 16 be has given importance to unfolding his inner potential through Transcendental Meditation, which many recent news articles have connected to his distinctive qualities of leadership, energy, and happiness, and his capacity to make friends, even with his opponents. It is very fortunate that he has now gained this position of prominence, albeit as Leader of the Opposition.
