Natural Law Party offers solution to international impasse over environment

As the environmental summit in Kyoto draws to a close with the likelihood of only very limited achievements, the Natural Law Party today has offered its unique solution to the world's environmental problems. Speaking on behalf of the Maharishi International Council of Natural Law Parties, Dr Reinhard Borowitz said that an effective environmental policy must tackle the real basis of pollution, which he described as the violation of Natural Law by billions of individuals in the world.

'It is very difficult and highly unpopular to legislate against environmentally damaging behaviour,' Dr Borowitz said. 'It is equally difficult to change people's attitudes and behaviour by education campaigns etc. The basis of pollution is the stress in world consciousness which leads to the continual violation of Natural Law by the whole population. It is necessary to re-establish the individual's own connection with Nature from within, so that spontaneously the individual does not violate Natural Law.

'We invite every government to establish a group of 7,000 people practising the technologies of Natural Law - Transcendental Meditation and Yogic Flying - which enliven the inner intelligence of Natural Law in every individual in society. Extensive scientific research has shown that this programme creates a more harmonious, balanced and stress-free collective consciousness,' Dr Borowitz said. 'This would not only reduce the amount of pollution in the world: it would also bring harmony and success to international gatherings such as these environmental summits, which will naturally become more fruitful and harmonious on the basis of the increased coherence in collective consciousness.

'These summits are now a waste of time,' Dr Borowitz said. 'Firstly, it is very hard for the different countries to agree, since each has different and often opposing needs. Secondly, even when they do agree, there is no mechanism in world politics to ensure that they work together and implement the agreements. Global problems require global solutions.'

In the future, Dr Borowitz said, the Natural Law Party is best placed to provide global solutions. 'We have a unique and integrated environmental strategy,' he said, 'which not only includes our consciousnesss-based programmes but also covers all areas of energy and transport policy and pollution, as well as the design of the whole built environment in which people live and work. Moreover, the Natural Law Party is now a world-wide political force, with a common platform in each of the 60 countries where the party is active. This allows us naturally to work together to bring about a healthy, pollution-free environment.'
