NATURAL LAW PARTY FACT SHEET:

How to reduce crime, violence and conflict, and create a stable state of world peace through the "Maharishi Effect":

The phenomenon of decreased negative trends and increased positive trends in society through the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programme of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Over 600 scientific studies have been conducted on Transcendental Meditation and Yogic Flying showing wide-ranging benefits for all aspects of life. Forty-five of these studies show that when 1% of the population of any city or country practises Transcendental Meditation, or when the square root of 1% practises Yogic Flying in a group, there are dramatic improvements in the whole society, including reduced stress, crime, accidents, violence and conflict, and improved quality of life. Statistically, this phenomenon, known as the Maharishi Effect, is the best established of all findings in the social sciences. According to the established formula, a group of only 10,000 people practising Transcendental Meditation and Yogic Flying together, morning and evening, in one place can create a global influence of peace and harmony.

l In 1993, there was a high profile demonstration of the Maharishi Effect in Washington D.C. A 27 member independent scientific review board included representatives from the Police and Washington universities. Predictions of reduced violent crime, improved quality of life, and higher approval ratings for government were lodged in advance with the review board. The predictions were supported during the assembly attended by 4000 TM-Sidhi participants. There was a 24% reduction in violent crime during the six week period of the assembly compared to the trend predicted by time-series analysis of preceding data.

l A study of crime rate in Merseyside found a 60% reduction in crime relative to UK national trends when a Maharishi Effect group was set up nearby in Skelmersdale. Merseyside crime reduced from the third highest to the lowest among metropolitan areas in England and Wales. A follow-up study found greatly improved quality of life & economic vitality in Merseyside during subsequent years.

l Davies found reduced conflict and war intensity, and progress towards peace in Lebanon during seven large assemblies of Yogic Flyers held in Israel, USA, Lebanon, Yugoslavia, and Holland.

l Orme-Johnson created a planned time series experiment in which a group of more than 200 TM-Sidhi participants practised Yogic Flying together in August and September 1983 in Jerusalem.

Predictions were lodged in advance with an independent panel. Improved quality of life indicators including reduced crime and war deaths were found during periods when the group exceeded the square root of 1% threshold.

l A study found both intervention and transfer function effects of reduced violent deaths through the Maharishi Effect in the USA from 1979-85.

l A 1987 paper reports five intervention studies using time series analysis to control for cyclical crime trends. Three studies found reduced metropolitan crime in New Delhi, Metro Manila, and Puerto Rico. Two other studies found comparable results on more comprehensive quality of life indices in USA.

l Reduced violent crimes were found in Washington, D.C. using time-series transfer function analysis of weekly crime data to measure the positive impact of a group of Yogic Flyers from 1981-83.

l A study of 24 cities with over 10,000 population in USA where 1% of the population began Transcendental Meditation in 1972 showed significantly less crime during the next year compared to matched control cities.
